Children are agents of change who have a special capacity to reduce disaster risk in their households, peers at school and communities. The main mechanism for harnessing that capacity is through disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience education that starts in schools.
The Bengkel Pemerkasaan Pengetahuan dan Kesedaran Bencana di Sekolah is a final phase of the DRR Experiential Learning Program in Pahang using school as a platform in engaging children and youth on knowledge about DRR. With this approach, the children can get early exposure about disaster knowledge and awareness. The program will be conducted on 29 September 2022 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Janda Baik (SKJB), Bentong, Pahang and being organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative (SEADPRI-UKM), UNICEF Malaysia and Sekolah Kebangsaan Janda Baik with support from MERCY Malaysia, ANCST STG on Young Professionals in DRR and Climate Change and U-INSPIRE Malaysia@UKM. The aim of this program is to improve children’s capacity in DRR through experiential learning. Empowering school children through their participation in various disaster related activities can provide them the knowledge and skills about DRR. There will be two sessions for this program which are the Introduction to Disaster session and Experiential Learning Activity session.
