Weather and climate events in the Indo-Pacific basin often evolve together and profoundly influence Asian as well as global climate. For example, MJO, which gets initiated/develops over the western Indian Ocean and propagates eastwards into the Pacific Ocean has repercussions on intraseasonal and interannual variability. We often see strong associations between Asian monsoon rainfall and SST variations in Indo-Pacific ocean basin. Cause and effects are less clear. A large number of studies have been carried out, for example, linking ENSO, Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), etc., and monsoon rainfall variability. Underlying all these studies is the critical role of atmosphere-ocean interactions on different spatial and temporal scales, and teleconnections. Monsoon dynamics also depend critically on land sea interactions and boundary layer processes, both of which have distinct features in Asia; Asian scientists know well that there are differences in the structure and diurnal variation of atmospheric boundary layers at higher latitudes. More research is urgently needed on this specific question, both for monsoons and in order to improve mesoscale, regional and global climate models.
There is extensive knowledge by the Asian scientific community about geographical variations in the monsoon phenomena and about trends in their variability as affected by regional climate change. Much will be learnt by bringing members of the Asian scientific community together to consider the data and the modelling of these phenomena, and more broadly how monsoon variability affects the variations of the climates of Asian countries. Hopefully this improved understanding might contribute to better monsoon predictions on a seasonal and multi-year time scales.
